THE DAYS WERE GOLDEN

and the good Frey dropped peace and plenty everywhere, and men went in and out and feared no wrong. King Volsung had a dwelling in the midst of fertile fields and fruitful gardens.

Features

Fairer than any dream was that dwelling. The roof was thatched with gold, and red turrets and towers rose above. The great feast-hall was long and high, and its walls were hung with sun-bright shields; and the door-nails were of silver.

Features

In the middle of the hall stood the pride of the Volsungs,—a tree whose blossoms filled the air with fragrance, and whose green branches, thrusting themselves through the ceiling, covered the roof with fair foliage. It was Odin’s tree, and King Volsung had planted it there with his own hands.

Information

Just like stackable chairs, Druto has minimal vertical clutter. Conceived to address the contradiction between space saving and legibility with other means than font-size, its design seeks solutions to optimize reading comfort in dense text. To achieve this, Druto takes a unique approach. Its design aims to support the lowest possible line spacing in prolonged text. In other words : to remain satisfactory with the highest possible x-height to interlinear white ratio in a context of prolonged reading. The first constraint for saving space in the interlinear white are, obviously, minimal ascenders and descenders. Therefore very high arches make the strokes stand out, while opening up the typeface. Druto’s strong visual horizontality reinforces the sensation of a powerful line in the absence of generous whites. The flat counter-forms, horizontal arches and low contrast serve to emphasize the horizontality of the line. As a result, the typeface remains very open and wide, making it more comfortable to read. Druto comes in four weighs, three widths, and respective italics.
